As a mom myself, I know how important it is to promote cognitive development in toddlers. That’s why I’m excited to share with you some fun and engaging activities that you can do with your little one to help boost their cognitive skills. I love to play these games with my own children, I KNOW you’ll love them too.
In this blog post, we’ll explore ten different activities that I’ve tried with my own child, and I hope you’ll find them just as enjoyable and beneficial for your toddler’s development.
So let’s dive in and have some fun while promoting cognitive growth!
Activities to Boost Cognitive Development
Play games that involve problem-solving
I LOVE playing shape-sorting puzzles, board games like Snakes and Ladders, and building blocks with my little one.
Not only is it a great way to bond with my child, but it also helps to develop their cognitive skills at the same time. By encouraging my toddler to solve problems and think critically, I’m helping them improve their problem-solving abilities, creativity, spatial awareness, and concentration.
So, next time you’re looking for a fun and educational activity to do with your toddler, why not try playing a game that involves problem-solving? Trust me, it’s a blast!
Read books together
Another activity that I love doing with my toddler is reading books together! It’s a great way to bond with your little one and also helps to promote cognitive development.
When selecting books, I like to make sure they’re age-appropriate and have colorful illustrations that capture my toddler’s attention. Here is a list of my favorite books for toddlers.
It also helps to expand their vocabulary and improves their ability to focus and concentrate. So, if you haven’t already, try setting aside some time each day to read with your toddler.
You’ll be amazed at how much they’ll love it and how much it can benefit their cognitive development!
Sing songs that teach concepts
We learned so many of our songs from Miss Rachel, but you can use youtube to get inspiration too!
We love singing songs that teach counting, colors, and shapes. It’s such a fun and interactive way to learn and it’s also great for promoting cognitive development.
When my child sings along, they’re practicing their memory skills and pattern recognition, which is super important for their cognitive growth. Singing can also help with their language development and communication skills.
Encourage imaginative play
As a mom, I’ve seen firsthand how imaginative play can do wonders for a toddler’s cognitive development. It’s amazing to see how much it can enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills!
Some of our favorite imaginative play activities include playing dress (you don’t need fancy play clothes, just items around the home work well)-up or building with blocks.
It also helps them learn about different roles and perspectives, which can be beneficial for their social and emotional development as well.
Practice sorting and categorizing
Sorting and categorizing is another great activity that my toddler and I love to do together. It’s a simple yet effective way to improve their cognitive skills, such as categorization and classification. You don’t need special toys either! Use what you have for this activity.
We like to practice sorting colors or shapes, but there are many other sorting and categorizing activities you can try with your toddler.
When my child sorts and categorizes, they’re learning how to group objects based on their characteristics, which is an important skill for their cognitive development. It also helps improve their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
So, why not give sorting and categorizing a try with your little one? It’s a fun and engaging activity that can also help boost their cognitive development!
Introduce puzzles and other brain teasers
Another activity that I’ve found to be effective in boosting my toddler’s cognitive development is introducing puzzles and brain teasers! YES, even regular chunky puzzles like this work for this!
There are many age-appropriate puzzles and brain teasers available that can help improve your toddler’s problem-solving and spatial awareness skills. Some of our favorites include simple jigsaw puzzles and shape-sorting games. When my toddler works on a puzzle or brain teaser, they’re using their cognitive skills to identify patterns, solve problems, and figure out how things fit together.
It’s also a great way to improve their spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination. So, why not try introducing some puzzles and brain teasers to your toddler’s playtime routine?
You might be surprised at how much they enjoy it and how much it can benefit their cognitive development!
Get messy with sensory activities
I just love getting messy with my toddler and doing sensory activities together! We have so much fun exploring different textures and materials, like play-dough or finger painting. Pre made sensory bins are also great for this kind of play.
These activities are not only entertaining, but they’re also great for enhancing cognitive development. When my toddler engages in sensory play, they get to use their senses to learn about the world around them.
It helps them improve their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, while also stimulating their curiosity and creativity. Plus, it’s a great way for us to bond and spend quality time together, which in turn breeds better behavior.
If you’re looking for a fun and engaging activity to boost your toddler’s cognitive development, give sensory play a try! You won’t regret it.

Play memory games
Playing memory games with my toddler is so much fun too. We like to play “Simon Says” or “Memory Match” together. You don’t have to use cards, you can use items from around the home! Mega blocks make an excellent memory match game. It’s amazing how these games can improve their cognitive skills like memory and attention, and they aren’t difficult to play.
When my little one plays these games, they’re learning to remember and recall information, which is an essential skill for cognitive development. These games also help them practice their listening and concentration skills, which can help them focus better.
I find it fascinating how such simple games can have such a significant impact on my child’s cognitive development.
So, the next time you’re looking for a fun and engaging activity to do with your toddler, try playing a memory game. You’ll both enjoy it!
Explore the outdoors
One of my favorite ways to boost my toddler’s cognitive development is by simply going outside. Exploring the outdoors helps enhance a toddler’s cognitive skills like observation and exploration. By the way, this is great for your older kids, and yourself as well.
Some outdoor activities that my toddler loves include going on nature walks and playing in the park. During our nature walks, we get to point out different plants and animals and discuss their characteristics. Sometimes I’ll even create a scavenger hunt to bring with us! Leaves, pinecones, bikes paths… all kinds of things can go on it.
And when we play in the park, my toddler gets to climb and explore different structures, which helps build their physical and cognitive skills. Overall, exploring the outdoors is a great way to engage with your little one while also boosting their cognitive development.
So, next time you have some free time, why not take your toddler on an outdoor adventure?
Limit screen time
As a mom, I understand the allure of using screens to entertain our toddlers, but it’s important to be mindful of the amount of screen time they have.
Excessive screen time can negatively impact a toddler’s cognitive development by hindering their language development, reducing their attention span, and limiting their social interactions according to studies. That’s why I try to limit my toddler’s screen time and encourage other activities that enhance their cognitive development.
Some tips for limiting screen time include setting specific time limits for screen use and creating alternative activities that your toddler will enjoy. For instance, you can try introducing games and puzzles that promote problem-solving or books that help with language development.
Additionally, try to prioritize interactive activities that encourage social interaction, such as playing with friends or engaging in imaginative play. It’s tougher to do if you’re working from home, but being mindful of the amount of screen time your little one gets is a great start, and not one of us is perfect in this department.
